Talegaon Dabhade, Pune – June 15, 2025
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon as an old pedestrian bridge over the Indrayani River near Kund Mala, a popular weekend destination in Pune’s Maval taluka, collapsed under heavy foot traffic. The disaster reportedly swept away 15 to 20 tourists into the swollen river.
A peaceful weekend turned into chaos
The region had been witnessing continuous heavy rainfall for the past two days. As the Indrayani River swelled, many tourists gathered at the bridge in Talegaon Dabhade to witness the dramatic water flow — unaware of the danger that awaited them.
According to preliminary reports, the bridge was in a dilapidated condition and had been closed for vehicles. Despite warnings, it remained a frequent walkway for pedestrians, especially during weekends and festive visits to Kund Mala.
The bridge gave way under pressure
Onlookers said the bridge had too many people on it when it suddenly gave way. Within seconds, dozens of people fell into the fast-moving river current, triggering panic across the area.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as heartbreaking. “We saw people screaming and trying to grab onto the sides, but the water was too strong,” said one local.
Rescue teams race against time
Immediately after the collapse, local police, disaster response teams, and villagers launched an urgent rescue operation. However, the strong river current and rising water levels have made the effort more difficult.
“The flow is strong and visibility is low due to heavy rains,” one official said. Boats and divers have been deployed, and search operations continue even as daylight fades.
A warning long ignored?
The bridge, according to locals, is several decades old and had seen no major renovation in years. Although closed for vehicles, it remained a vital link for pilgrims and tourists visiting the area.
Now, the tragedy has raised questions about the maintenance of public infrastructure and the enforcement of safety measures, especially in tourist-heavy zones.
Officials issue updates and appeal for calm
While the exact number of those swept away is still being confirmed, authorities fear that 15 to 20 individuals may be missing. Families are being contacted and support is being extended to those affected.
A government official stated, “We are doing everything possible to find the missing and assist the families. Our teams are working round-the-clock despite the weather.”
Another reminder of safety gaps
This incident underscores the urgent need to audit and repair old infrastructure, especially in regions prone to tourist surges and seasonal rainfall. As the rescue operation continues, all eyes remain on Kund Mala, hoping for miracles amid the heartbreak.
