Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacts with astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla aboard the International Space Station as part of the Axiom-4 mission. This historic conversation marks India’s growing presence in global space exploration and inspires the next generation of Indian space scientists.

In a heartfelt and historic interaction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi connected with Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission. Shukla is among a crew of astronauts from four nations on a 14-day journey in space—marking the first time in over four decades that an Indian has reached the ISS.

This moment isn’t just a scientific milestone—it’s an emotional triumph for the nation. “You may be far from Earth, but you’re closest to the hearts of 1.4 billion Indians,” PM Modi told Shubhanshu during their 18-minute conversation.

“Your Name Brings Auspiciousness, Your Journey Begins a New Era”: PM Modi

Speaking from the heart, the Prime Minister said, “Your name has ‘Shubh’ (auspiciousness) and your mission marks the auspicious beginning of a new era for India.” The PM added, “Though I am speaking to you alone, my voice carries the hopes and enthusiasm of every Indian.”

Shubhanshu Shukla from Space: “This Is Not Just My Journey—It Belongs to India”

From hundreds of kilometers above Earth, Shukla replied, “I’m safe, healthy, and grateful for the blessings of my fellow Indians.” He added, “This journey of 400 km from Earth’s surface isn’t just mine—it’s our nation’s journey. I never imagined becoming an astronaut, but India today turns dreams into reality.”

Halwa in Zero Gravity: Sharing Indian Culture Beyond Borders

PM Modi brought a touch of humor and tradition to the conversation. He asked, “Did you share the carrFot halwa you carried with your crew?” Laughing, Shukla replied, “Yes, I brought carrot halwa, moong dal halwa, and aamras to let others taste India’s rich culinary heritage. They loved it!”

16 Earth Orbits a Day: The View from Space Is Beyond Words

PM Modi marveled at Shubhanshu’s experience of orbiting Earth 16 times a day at 28,000 km/h. Shukla noted, “Looking out the window, we were above Hawaii. Watching 16 sunrises and sunsets daily is surreal. This speed mirrors India’s fast growth.”

When asked how India looks from space, Shukla said, “Borders disappear. Earth looks united. And India—it’s far more majestic than what we see on a map. It’s massive and beautiful.”

Adapting to Microgravity: Life Without Gravity Isn’t Easy

PM Modi also asked about the challenges of living in space. Shukla explained, “Despite extensive training, everything changes up here. Small tasks—walking, sleeping, even drinking water—become hard. Right now, my feet are strapped down just to stay in place.”

Shubranshu Sukla Balancing Science and Spirituality in Space

The PM inquired whether meditation helps in space. Shukla affirmed, “Yes, mindfulness keeps the mind calm and helps make better decisions under pressure. Science and spirituality together are India’s strength—and essential in space too.”

Experiments That Could Impact Health and Food Security on Earth

Shukla proudly shared that Indian scientists have designed seven experiments for this mission. The first focuses on stem cells and muscle loss in microgravity, which could help treat age-related muscle loss on Earth.

Another project explores microalgae growth. “These are rich in nutrients. If we succeed in cultivating them efficiently in space, it can significantly boost food security and nutrition on Earth,” Shukla explained.

“Never Stop Trying”: A Message to India’s Youth

When PM Modi asked what message he’d like to send to the youth, Shubhanshu’s response was powerful: “India has big dreams. There’s no single path to success—but one thing is common: Never stop trying. Adopt this mantra, and you’ll never be defeated.”

Looking Ahead: India’s Space Dreams Have Just Taken Off

PM Modi also mentioned India’s future ambitions—Gaganyaan, a national space station, and even landing an Indian on the Moon. Shukla responded with excitement, “I’m absorbing every bit of knowledge like a sponge. I’m sure my experiences here will help advance India’s space missions quickly.”

His international crew members are already asking, “When is Gaganyaan launching?” Shukla smiled and said, “Very soon.”

“The Tricolor Wasn’t Here Yesterday—Now It Is”

Near the end of the conversation, Shukla became emotional. “The Indian flag now waves inside the ISS. That flag wasn’t here yesterday. This moment makes me proud and emotional.”

“India Has Reached the ISS, But Our Journey Has Just Begun”

In closing, PM Modi said, “Your journey will fuel the spirit of a developed India. Now we’re not just taking flight—we’re preparing new runways for future generations.”

Shukla’s parting message to students and young minds was simple, yet profound:
“Sky has never been the limit. Remember that—and you will rise.”
